Overwatch 2 update fixes ‘accidental purchases’ chat bug
A new Overwatch 2 update fixes several major issues with Blizzard’s FPS game, including a chat bug that apparently caused accidental purchases from the in-game store. Overwatch 2 phone as a requirement for players who have played the original multiplayer game before, and to help with account merge issues.
The chat bug in question, detailed by a user on the Monitor Reddit , apparently caused text typed in the game’s chat window to also be interpreted as input for menu navigation. This meant that if someone looked at an item that could be unlocked, just double tapping the spacebar in chat – which is easy to do quickly if chatting with other players – would result in the purchase of the object.
Dracyoshi, who reported the original bug, says the updates rolled out during the maintenance window, which lasted about an hour starting at 7:00 p.m. PT / 10:00 p.m. ET on October 7 (3:00 a.m. BST / 4:00 a.m. CEST on October 8), seem to have solved the problem with chat. They say they have “still not received a refund and I doubt I ever will” for the purchase made, with a response from Blizzard confirming that “We are unable to offer refunds or any compensation for unlocks made with in-game currency in Overseer.
Additionally, Blizzard claims that its database upgrades following an extended Overwatch 2 server downtime have “resulted in a quadrupling of our capacity and possible reduction in login queues of the Overwatch 2 server.” day to day”. He remarks that “early signs are good” but that “the hours of play over the weekend will be his biggest test yet”.
Additionally, Blizzard notes that this higher number of concurrent players means “matchmaking systems are affected”, resulting in longer wait times between games. He says he’s making changes to matchmaking setups that he hopes will reduce wait times, but will continue to monitor him over the weekend.
Meanwhile, many players are still reporting that many of their Overwatch 2 heroes are locked because they are mistakenly placed in Blizzard’s new “first player experience” system. Some players who didn’t have heroes locked say this has now happened to them between updates. Personally, I also encountered this problem on one version of the game, but not when logging into another version on the same account.
This particular issue is not addressed directly in the latest status update. Blizzard notes, however, that many players are still in the account merge process and are still missing items from their collection that they previously had in the first game, but the updated database leaves “more bandwidth to perform these merges”. Hopefully the issue will be resolved as soon as possible, as players reporting that they found themselves in competitive games with only three characters available is definitely not an ideal look to transition into those aforementioned “weekend play hours.”
